Gaming Mouse Returns After Two Decades

Two decades following the debut of what Razer claims was the globe’s first gaming mouse, a reimagined Boomslang has arrived on the market. At first sight, this updated version maintains the symmetrical design characteristic of the early 2000s classic. However, as expected, it incorporates numerous modern technological advancements. Razer is producing just 1,337 units of this special 20th Anniversary Edition, creating a highly exclusive release.

Original vs. Modern Specifications

The initial Boomslang featured 2,000 DPI mechanical ball tracking technology that was revolutionary for its era (though the very first iteration actually delivered 1,000 DPI and emerged before 2005). The contemporary model dramatically increases performance to 45,000 DPI, while incorporating 8,000 Hz polling rates and optical switches engineered for 100 million clicks.

The original version required a wired connection, whereas this modern iteration operates wirelessly and includes a charging dock featuring what Razer describes as next-generation charging capabilities. While the fundamental symmetrical shape remains largely faithful to the original, the mouse now features visible stitching on its buttons, indicating the addition of PU leather wrapping on the primary buttons for improved tactile experience and grip performance.

Enhanced Features and Customization

The mouse boasts nine-zone Chroma RGB lighting with underglow effects—a modern interpretation of the original’s translucent illumination. Each zone now offers customization across 16.8 million color options and dynamic effects that synchronize with over 300 Chroma-integrated games.

Regarding programmability, users gain access to eight programmable controls through Razer Synapse, allowing for sophisticated macros and customized profiles.

Limited Availability

According to Razer, only 1,337 individually serialized units of this limited-edition gaming mouse will be released globally, positioned as exclusive items for collectors seeking a piece of gaming history.

Historical Context

It’s noteworthy that the genuine original Boomslang and its distinctive design actually trace back to 1999 with 1,000 DPI tracking capabilities. That mouse was produced during the company’s initial phase as a strictly American operation.

Razer was re-established in 2005 as an American-Singaporean multinational corporation with headquarters in both Queenstown, Singapore, and Irvine, California. Therefore, the 20th Anniversary celebration appears to reference that 2005 relaunch rather than the mouse’s actual introduction date.

What seems somewhat unusual is that the current company maintains strong connections to its origins, with current CEO Min-Liang Tan having been co-founder of the original Razer and co-designer of the first Boomslang. Yet there’s minimal acknowledgment of the mouse’s complete historical timeline in this release.
